  • Tell your bank you’ll be out of the country so you don’t have problems trying to use your card abroad (at the beginning before you get a Chinese bank account)
  • Figure out what you DON’T want
  • Bring original certificates (degree, diplomas etc) they’ll be necessary when you apply for a visa.
  • Choose a City and decide which area
  • Unlock your phone
  • Find Someone Who’s Done it Before
  • Buy a VPN (do some research)
  • Learn Some Basic Chinese and Download a Chinese dictionary
  • Bring a good pair of shoes (Chinese streets are not easy on the feet or your Louboutin’s.
  • Men: Bring shoes if your feet are average or larger
  • Ladies – tampons, razors, wax (especially if you’re not in a big city)
  • Bring essential medicine
  • Ladies – buy over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders (bras) if you have a larger bosom and don’t want to wear something from the 1950s.
  • Get shots
  • Condoms/ birth control (lots of ‘fake’ condom stories)
  • Buy small gifts – candies, snacks, postcards
  • Don’t bring your vintage Chanel handbag
  • Unpack half of your clothes
  • Get digital copies of your books
  • Organize all of your online account passwords
  • Feel excited about your new adventure!
  • Our Chinese words of the week are ‘plane’ – 飞机 (fēi jī)

    • and ‘mobile phone’ – 手机 (shǒu jī)
