The character 医 is made up of an arrow 矢 inside a box 匚. To understand the character further, look at its traditional counterpart, . In the top left-hand corner is the simplified character, and on the right 殳 the character for spear. Underneath is 酉, the character for wine. Ancient men considered sickness to be caused by evil influences. So, healing was symbolized by taking drawing the arrow from the quiver and shooting the disease. Wine was also used as a form of medicine.
