Modal Particles

Modal particles are words that are not a necessary part of a sentence, but usually suggest a ‘mood’. You’ll hear them often in spoken Chinese at the end of a sentence.

is most commonly used to make a suggestion.

For example:

我们走吧 Let’s go!

休息一下吧 Have a rest.

吧 can also be used to agree with something, even if you’re not very happy about it.

For example:

好吧 may be similar to us saying, ‘fine’ when it isn’t really.
