要 is very similar to the character 想 as they can both mean ‘to want’. However, both also have different uses. 想 can mean ‘to miss’, for example, 我想你。 I miss you.
To use 要 as ‘to want’, use the sentence pattern:
Subject + 要 + Noun
你要咖啡吗? Do you want coffee?
When 想 and 要 come before a verb, their meanings a slightly different. 想 is a polite ‘ would like’, whereas 要 is more forceful, meaning ‘want to’.
For example,
我要睡觉。 I want to sleep.
我也想试试。 I would also like to try.
